Received from Wolfgang:
I wanted to talk to you about the PDF format, though. I have worked a lot with Tibetan fonts and publishing Tibetan texts in PDF for the past few years. Apart from the native problems in publishing software like QuarkExpress (all versions) and Adobe InDesign (clearly superior to the former) I found that PDF is not as reliable a format as I had originally thought. The main problem I am running into, is the rendition of special characters within the Latin/Western fonts and sub- and superscript letters (regardless whether it's Sambhota or TCP). Sometimes the Western fonts don't come out well on screen (like in your Prayer Booklet for download - see example Tib.gif as attached to this email), sometimes the Tibetan shows correctly on screen but not in print (in the same document). A good example is a brochure I did for Tenzin Wangyal (http://vajrabhairava.com/21/21_Nails_2.9.pdf). It looks all cool on screen but when you print it out half of the sub- and superscripts, etc. don't print. When I print out the Chantbook the same happens (see attached file print.gif). Other people in our group experience the same. So far, I remedied the problem by converting all Tibetan into vector graphics, like plates that go into the text.
How are you dealing with this problem?
W.
any ideas?

I was wondering how you are generating the PDF's. Obviously you need to embed the fonts. I tried to download the pdf you posted the link for. I seem to have forgotten my password for Yamataka. I would be glad to take a look at it for you is you sent me a copy.
